Sprawling across 40 acres at the foot of the Quill volcano, Golden Rock Resort is a luxury eco-escape on the Dutch Caribbean island of St. Eustatius. It’s on the doorstep of healthy reefs and historic shipwrecks, and with exceptional visibility, it’s regarded by many as offering the best diving in the Caribbean.

Rather than offering a busy beach-resort atmosphere, Golden Rock’s focus is on diving and nature experiences in a quiet corner of the Caribbean. This St. Eustatius dive resort has received Green Globe and Green Key certifications for its sustainability credentials, which include its own solar park and water-treatment systems.

Amenities

When you’re not out diving, you can take advantage of Golden Rock Resort’s two swimming pools (the Hummingbird and Hibiscus), both of which are surrounded by sun loungers and landscaped grounds.

If you want to stay active, there’s a gym with ocean views, yoga facilities and a mini golf course, as well as courts for playing tennis, pickleball, and padel. Families are well catered for with a children’s playground and board games are available on request.

For relaxation, head to The Rock Spa, which offers massages, body scrubs, and facials in a peaceful setting.

As Golden Rock Resort is set across hilly grounds, there’s an electric shuttle, known as the “Golden Express”, that circulates the property. Additionally, there’s a 20,000-square-foot greenhouse, which produces herbs, fruits, and vegetables for the two restaurants at this St. Eustatius dive resort.

Food

When it comes to dining at Golden Rock Resort, there are two main venues: Breeze Restaurant and Bobbie’s Beach Club.

Backed by St. Eustatius’ dramatic volcano, Breeze is an octagonal-shaped restaurant where you can dine accompanied by sweeping ocean views. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served here, with the menu focusing on local ingredients and global flavors. Freshly caught seafood is a highlight, although there are plenty of meat and vegetarian/vegan options available.

Bobbie’s Beach Club offers a more casual and social alternative. Located down by the water, it offers everything from sushi to BBQ and fusion-style cuisine, sometimes accompanied by live music.

Additionally, there’s the Pool Bar where you can grab cocktails, wine, beer, fresh juices, and other drinks without having to leave your sun lounger.

Diving

With its volcanic walls, healthy coral gardens, and fascinating wrecks, diving in St. Eustatius Marine Park offers something for everyone. It’s blissfully uncrowded compared to major Caribbean dive destinations and most of the dive sites are located between a 5- and 20-minute boat ride from Golden Rock Resort.

Statia Divers is the in-house operator and offers two-tank morning boat dives, plus an afternoon dive and night dives on request. Complimentary Nitrox is available for certified divers and there’s a full range of high-quality ScubaPro rental gear on hand.

With its cliffside lagoon, Statia Divers boasts one of the most spectacular dive training locations in the Caribbean and is complete with an intentionally submerged American school bus. A range of PADI certification courses are available if you want to up-skill during your stay, including Wreck Diving, Deep Diver, and Enriched Air (Nitrox).

Historically, St. Eustatius was an important Caribbean trading center, and the surrounding waters contain numerous wrecks and archaeological remains. Macro diving here is also excellent, with highlights including lettuce sea slugs, flamingo tongue snails and Pederson cleaning shrimp.

Diving is a year-round activity in St. Eustatius, with water temperatures averaging between 79 and 84°F (26 and 29°C). Air temperatures range from 80 to 86°F (27 to 30°C) throughout the year, although rainfall varies considerably. The hurricane season extends from June through November.

Other Activities

If you’re traveling with non-diving family members, there are plenty of activities to keep them busy at Golden Rock Resort.

Aside from heritage walks to discover St. Eustatius’ colonial and trade history, the resort can arrange guided treks that explore the tropical forest and volcanic landscapes of Quill. Island tours area also available, taking in Oranjestad, Boven National Park and Zeelandia Beach where nesting sea turtles can sometimes be seen.

Snorkeling is possible around the resort’s beachfront area and deep-sea fishing charters can be arranged. Sunset boat cruises are a popular way to end the day and admire the island from the water. The stargazing on St. Eustatius is also particularly good due to the low levels of development and light pollution.
