Their single-minded focus on relaxation suggests you take off your watch and only listen out for the traditional lali (wooden drum) to let you know when it’s time to eat.
Getting to Beqa Lagoon Resort involves a 2.5-hour scenic coastal road transfer from Nadi International Airport on the main island to the Pacific Harbour where you will board a boat to whisk you away from life’s worries. Within 45 minutes you will see Beqa Island and hear the sound of the traditional Fijian welcome song and know you have been transported to your idyllic scuba diving vacation destination.
The resort works hand in hand with the local community and villages from which they employ their 75 staff and purchase food from. Their traditions and heritage are intact, and their ceremonies and culture are readily shared with you, their guests, and you are welcome to explore. You are far more likely to be invited into the home of a local on Beqa Island than almost anywhere in the South Pacific.
Accommodations
There are just 25 luxurious bures (traditional Fijian rooms) spread through Beqa Lagoon Resorts tropical gardens and beach. These 430 SQ foot accommodations are all fully air-conditioned as well as having fans and mosquito screens for your comfort.
Twelve bures enjoy a stunning beachfront; three lie in the vibrant tropical gardens, and six encircle the glorious koi pond. Family suites are available complete with living room and two bedrooms, and the honeymoon suite is unsurpassed for ocean gazing.
Whichever you choose, expect to be able to revel in comfortable and peaceful surroundings and to enjoy your private sundeck, loungers, and hammock.
With the overriding aim to provide the ultimate in relaxation your bure has no telephone or TV, Wifi is available at a small cost, but do remember there is an off button on your devices for a reason. A mini bar is in each room along with tea and coffee making facilities, and the glorious Fijian water is quite literally on tap.
Dining
Dining here is not just a treat for your taste buds, the whole experience is a treat. The lali drum tells you it’s time for food; simply follow the lantern lit paths to the spectacular open air bure to dine by the water with spectacular views and that famous Fijian warmth and hospitality.
Where possible the food is locally sourced and much of what you eat is grown on the island or close to it. Fruit, bread, and a hot option are available for breakfast, and there are three choices for lunch. Dinner is three courses with three choices for the main dish, and there’s always a vegetarian option too. While there’s no a la carte menu, specific diets can be catered for, and children’s meals are available.
For those wanting romance, candlelit dinners, and castaway style picnics can be arranged as well as private dining on the deck of your bure.
Amenities
Your relaxation would not be complete without a visit to the beachside spa where traditional practices and the best of Fijian products or locally grown herbs combine with adept hands to soothe away any remaining cares. Relax in the open-air treatment rooms kissed by the ocean breeze on which floats the scent from the tropical gardens to complete your full sensory repose. Private in-room options are also available.
Deep sea fishing is available for those who want to capture fish outside of their camera lens. The world-famous Frigates surf break lies just a short boat ride away if you fancy tangling with the ocean top-side. Guided kayaking, volleyball, and paddle boarding are available, and you can snorkel straight from the beach in the marine protected area or hop on a boat trip to snorkel.
The resort boasts a library, trips to local villages and waterfalls, cooking classes, walks focused on medicinal herbs, talks about firewalking, culture, mat weaving, bat watching and much more. This is a great destination if you travel with non-divers.
For children, babysitters can be arranged along with high chairs and cots.
Diving
Diving with sharks is what this area is famous for, and Beqa Lagoon Resort certainly delivers. Just 15 minutes from the shore lies the Cathedral; a dive site famous for its tiger sharks and indeed a dive of a lifetime. Expect to see up to 8 tiger sharks some up to 12ft long. Guests could also encounter bull sharks, lemon sharks, nurse sharks, grey reef and black and white tip reef sharks so keep your eyes wide open. If that wasn’t enough excitement, Beqa Lagoon Resort also offers the ‘Big Fish Encounter’ where you can spot nine different shark species along with swirling bait balls of trevally and giant grouper. Be sure to ask us to make an advanced booking for these dives as they do fill up and you certainly don’t want to miss out.
Situated close to the world’s largest barrier reef Beqa Lagoon Resort boasts a myriad of dive sites and a few wrecks just 20 minutes away. These range in depth from 15ft to 100ft depth and some beyond. The temperature ranges from 75-84 degrees throughout the year; the best visibility is between July- September. Expect to marvel at octopus, clown triggerfish, leaf scorpion fish, blue ribbon eels, orangutan crabs, rays, sharks and a plethora of colourful reef fish and critters and a dazzling array of soft corals too.
There is a marine protected house reef accessible directly from the beach providing a leisurely day dive and easily accessible night dive.
If you are not certified or travelling with someone not certified then, the dive centre offers discover scuba experiences and open water courses. Nitrox fills are available along with its certification course and many other courses up to assistant instructor.
Full gear hire is available which includes dive computers and UV night dive gear to see the reef like you have never seen it.
The resort operates five boats which mostly run two dive trips leaving at 8 am and returning around 1.30pm in time for lunch. Boats are 28-58ft long with space for between 6 and 16 divers, all are fully equipped for the diving day.
